McBriare Samuel Lanyon "Mac" DeMarco is a Canadian singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer, born 1990 in Duncan, Vancouver Island. During high school DeMarco learnt guitar from his grandmother and played in several indie/post-punk bands. Soon after moving to Vancouver in 2009 DeMarco released a self-produced album, Heat Wave, as part of the indie rock project Makeout Videotape, and he toured with Vancouver band Japandroids that same year. He then moved to Montreal to further his solo career but, failing to find work as a musician, participated in medical experiments for money and worked on a road paving crew. In 2012 he secured a recording contract with Captured Tracks and released the Rock and Roll Night Club EP, followed by his debut full-length album entitled 2. The album was received well by critics, garnering a "Best New Music" rating from Pitchfork. One of his songs, "Moving Like Mike", was licensed by U.S. retailer Target for a commercial. DeMarco's relaxed lo-fi sound of simple repetitive melodies coupled with subtle guitar treatments giving a psychedelic "buzz", can induce a sense of "melancholic euphoria" in the listener. To-date DeMarco has released nine studio albums including the standouts 2, Salad Days, This Old Dog and the 2015 EP Another One. DeMarco uses vintage equipment and gear for his music. He mainly played on a battered $30 Teisco electric guitar but stopped playing it live since it would often break apart.
