Otis Jackson Jr. aka Madlib is an American DJ, music producer, multi-instrumentalist and rapper born 1973 in Oxnard, California to musician parents Otis Jackson, Sr. and Dora Sinesca Jackson. He sampled his first song at 11 years old and is one of the most prolific and critically acclaimed hip-hop producers of his time. Madlib works under many names and with many other artists such as Flying Lotus, MF Doom and Freddie Gibbs. In 2003 Madlib was invited to remix tracks from the famous Blue Note Records archive, which he released as the excellent Shades of Blue. In addition to the remixes, the album contained newly recorded interpretations of Blue Note originals. Of the 33 studio releases by Madlib, his two collaborations with LA based hip hop artist Freddie Gibbs have achieved broad market popularity due to their accessibility and superior artistry and production. Piñata was released to widespread critical acclaim in March 2014. Entirely produced by Madlib, the 17-track LP features contributions from Raekwon, Earl Sweatshirt, Danny Brown, Domo Genesis, Scarface, BJ the Chicago Kid, Ab-Soul, Casey Veggies, Meechy Darko and Mac Miller, among others. A follow-up 'MadGibbs' collaboration album titled Bandana was released in June 2019. Again, entirely produced by Madlib, it features guest appearances from Pusha T, Killer Mike, Anderson Paak, Yasiin Bey and Black Thought. Other outstanding Madlib releases include Shades of Blue: Madlib Invades Blue Note, Beat Konducta Vol. 5 'Dil Cosby Suite', and Madlib Medicine Show No.5 'History of the Loop Digga'.. Madlib has stated that his most significant musical influences include Miles Davis, Sun Ra and David Axelrod. Some of his hip-hop influences are Large Professor, Marley Marl, Paul C, DJ Pooh and Dr. Dre.
