Mastodon is an American heavy metal band formed 2000 in Atlanta, Georgia, by Troy Sanders (bass, vocals), Brent Hinds (guitar, vocals), Bill Kelliher (guitar), and Brann Dailor (drums, vocals). The members came together with a common love for the sludge and heavy metal sounds of bands such as Melvins, Neurosis, Iron Maiden and Thin Lizzy. The band landed a record deal with Relapse records in 2001 and released the EP Lifesblood in 2001 and their debut album, Remission in 2002. The album contained the singles "March of the Fire Ants" and "Crusher/Destroyer", which was featured on Tony Hawk's Underground video game. Their second album, the superb Leviathan, was released in 2004 and was a concept album based on Herman Melville's novel Moby-Dick. The album received critical acclaim and was named #1 album of the year by Kerrang! and Terrorizer, and #2 by Metal Hammer magazine. The track "Blood and Thunder," which featured Clutch vocalist Neil Fallon, was chosen as one of the most important recordings of the decade by National Public Radio. By this stage Mastodon had established themselves as one of the best sludge metal bands in the US. To-date they have released seven studio albums and two live albums. Their first four albums: Remission, Leviathan, Blood Mountain and Crack in the Skye are all superb releases. Also highly recommended is the 2008 compilation Mastodon. "Mastodon's innovative, lyrically astute blend of progressive metal, grindcore and hardcore helped position the band as one of the preeminent metal acts of the early 21st century" (James Monger, Allmusic).
