Perfume is a Japanese techno pop girl group formed 2000 in Hiroshima by Ayano Ōmoto aka Nocchi, Yuka Kashino aka KASHIYUKA, and Ayaka Nishiwaki aka a-chan. The group has been signed with Japanese mega-talent management group Amuse, Inc. since 2003 and with Universal Music Group since 2012. The band was formed inside the Young Talent Academy Actor's School Hiroshima and debuted with their first Hiroshima-local single "Omajinai Perori" released in March 2002. A year later they moved to Tokyo, started to work with producer Yasutaka Nakata, and released their first nationwide indie single, "Sweet Donuts" in August 2003. In September 2005, they released their major debut single "Linear Motor Girl", but it was not until 2008, when the group's seventh single "Polyrhythm" was chosen as the theme song of a recycling campaign by NHK, that they started to receive major attention in Japan. Their high-BPM techno-dance anthems have since seen the band reach the top of the Japanese pop charts and become pop idols in Japan and across Asia and the U.S. 2013's Level3 rose into the Billboard World Albums Top Five. The group closed the decade with additional international hit albums Cosmic Explorer and Future Pop. To-date the group has released eight studio albums plus over 50 Singles. Standout albums include Perfume: Complete Best (2006), GAME (2008), Triangle (2009), and Level3 (2013). The trio of members were only 11 and 12 years old at the time they started singing together, and their activity was at first limited to their local area; however, once they were introduced to producer Nakata Yasutaka, until then best known as the creative force behind Shibuya-kei indie pop unit Capsule, their careers took off. As the band matured, they shifted to a slicker, more sci-fi-oriented image and a change in musical style, with Nakata adopting a vocoder-heavy production style strongly influenced by European electro and house, particularly Daft Punk. The band's name was chosen because Ayaka Nishiwaki ("a-chan"), Yuka Kashino ("KASHIYUKA"), and Yuka Kawashima ("Kawayuka") had the same Japanese kanji character (ka/kaori, fragrance) in their names, so they named the group "Perfume."
