Michael Alden Hadreas aka Perfume Genius, is an American singer, songwriter, and musician born 1981 in Des Moines, Iowa. Hadreas's music explores topics including sexuality, his personal struggle with Crohn's Disease, domestic abuse, and the dangers faced by gay men in contemporary society. In 2008 Hadreas set up MySpace page under the name Perfume Genius, beginning his music career. His chosen name comes from the genius perfume-maker from the 2006 Tom Tykwer movie Perfume: The Story of a Murderer. To date Hadreas has released six consistently strong studio albums of experimental leaning chamber pop, plus numerous excellent singles. Standout albums include Too Bright (2014), No Shape (2017), Set My Heart on Fire Immediately (2020) and Ugly Season (2022). The music of Ugly Season was written for Perfume Genius and choreographer Kate Wallich’s immersive dance piece, "The Sun Still Burns Here". The work was commissioned by the Seattle Theatre Group and Mass MoCA and was performed via residencies in Seattle, Minneapolis, New York City and Boston throughout 2019.
