Peter Gabriel is an English singer-songwriter, record producer and humanitarian born 1950 in Chobham, Surrey. He rose to fame as the original lead singer and flautist of the Prog rock band Genesis. After leaving Genesis in 1975, Gabriel launched a successful solo career that continues to the present day. Continuing the creative songwriting and music compositional skills honed with Genesis, Gabriel created a body of superbly produced sophisticated art-rock music which extended into areas such as world music, orchestral and modern classical music. His debut self-titled solo album released in 1977 was critically acclaimed and set the standard for his 15 studio albums to-date, which are consistently excellent. He has created several outstanding movie soundtracks including Birdy, Passion (music for the Last Temptation of Christ) and Long Walk Home: Music From The Rabbit-Proof Fence. Outstanding releases include the first four solo albums, all self titled but generally known as "Car", "Scratch", "Melt" and "Security", plus the later albums Plays Live, So, Passion, Us, Up, New Blood, and Secret World Live. Gabriel has also worked hard to promote World music which becomes increasingly evident in his music from the third solo album "Melt" onward. He is the driving force behind the global WOMAD project and he created Real World Studios and Record Label to promote the works of artists such as Yungchen Lhamo, Nusrat Fateh Ail Khan and Youssou N'Dour. Gabriel also has a longstanding association with Amnesty International and other humanitarian causes.
