Pink Floyd's 1971 compilation Relics (subtitled "A Bizarre Collection of Antiques & Curios") is widely regarded by critics and fans as an essential, if flawed, gateway into the band's experimental early years. Originally released as a budget-priced stopgap between Atom Heart Mother and Meddle, it serves as a snapshot of the band's rapid evolution from Syd Barrett-led psychedelic pop to the space-rock and hard-rock sounds that would eventually lead to The Dark Side of the Moon. Many reviewers suggest Relics is the perfect starting point for listeners who only know Pink Floyd’s 70s hits but want to explore their psychedelic origins.
Pink Floyd's 1971 compilation album Relics featured a cover drawing by drummer Nick Mason, who was at the time studying at Regent Street Polytechnic. Later releases had a colour photo of Mason's design, from a model created by Storm Thorgerson.
