R.E.M. was an American rock band formed 1980 in Athens, Georgia. The original lineup was drummer Bill Berry, guitarist Peter Buck, bassist/backing vocalist Mike Mills, and lead vocalist Michael Stipe. The band developed their Indie rock sound based on Peter Buck's ringing guitar sound and Stipe's distinctive vocals, underpinned by skilled song-craft and intelligent lyrics. Their first five albums released between 1987-1988 are all classics. Outstanding albums include Murmur, Reckoning, Lifes Rich Pageant, Automatic for the People and the live Unplugged Sessions.
