Sade is an English band formed 1982 in London by lead singer, Sade Adu, together with Stuart Matthewman (guitars, saxophone), Andrew Hale (keyboards) and Paul S. Denman (bass). Their music features elements of soul, trip-hop, smooth jazz and sophisti-pop. The band was part of a new wave of British R&B-oriented artists during the late-1980s and early-1990s that also included artists Soul II Soul, The Brand New Heavies, Simply Red, Jamiroquai and Lisa Stansfield. The band's debut studio album, Diamond Life (1984), reached number two on the UK Album Chart, selling over 1.2 million copies and won the Brit Award for Best British Album in 1985. To-date they have released a total of Six studio albums, standouts include Diamond Life, Promise, Love Deluxe and Lover's Rock, plus the excellent 2002 live album Lovers Live. The band has sold more than 75 million records worldwide to date. Helen Folasade Adu aka Sade was Born in Nigeria, but brought up in Essex, England. She gained modest recognition as a fashion designer and part-time model, prior to joining the band Pride in the early 1980s. She has been credited as one of the most successful British female artists in history, and is often recognised as an influence on contemporary music. Her services to music were recognised with an award of the Officer of the Order of the British Empire honour in 2002, and later the rank of the Commander of the same order in 2017.
