Satan is an English heavy metal band formed 1979 in Newcastle upon Tyne by original lineup Russ Tippins (guitar), Steve Ramsey (guitar), Andrew Frepp (vocals), Steven Bee (bass) and Andy Reed (drums). After numerous personnel changes, the current day lineup continues with Tippins and Ramsey on guitars, plus Brian Ross (vocals), Graeme English (bass, classical guitar), and Sean Taylor (drums). As well as lineup changes the band changed names, for a time they were called Blind Fury, who put out one album, Out of Reach (1985), before reverting to the name Satan. In 1988, the group again changed its name to Pariah, releasing two albums under that name before folding in the early 1990s. In 2011 the band re-formed under the name Satan. Known as part of the new wave of British heavy metal movement, Satan is considered influential for playing a form of proto-thrash/speed metal that was fairly advanced by the standards of the early 1980s. The band has been a formative hub for other UK metal bands, with transient members from bands such as Blitzkrieg, Atomkraft, Persian Risk, Cronos, Sabbat and Skyclad. The band's first four albums are their definitive releases: Court in the Act (1983) and Suspended Sentence (1987), followed after a 26 year gap by Life Sentence (2013), and Atom by Atom (2015). Guitarist Russ Tippins is also a member of Brooklyn US based progressive hard rock band Tanith, who released the commendable 2019 album In Another Time. Also the metal-folk offshoot band Skyclad, featuring Satan's Steve Ramsey and Graeme English, plus Sabbat vocalist Martin Walkyier, have also released many fine Celtic-folk tinged heavy metal albums, including the standout A Burnt Offering for the Bone Idol from 1992.
