Serani Poji is a Japanese pop group formed 1999 in Tokyo by Tomoko Sasaki (keyboards, vocals) and Yukichi (vocals). Yumi Higashino (vocals) replaced Yukichi in 2002 and remained for several years. Mainstay Tomoko is a successful video game soundtrack composer and was formerly in the band S.S.T. who produced many game soundtracks for Sega. Yukichi was the lead vocalist for the band Cecil. Serani Poji are identified as part of the "Shibuya-kei" music style that flourished in Japan in the mid-to late 1990s. The music genre is distinguished by a "cut-and-paste" approach that was inspired by the kitsch fusion, and artifice from certain music styles of the past. The most common reference points were 1960s culture and Western pop music, especially the work of Burt Bacharach, Brian Wilson, Phil Spector and Serge Gainsbourg. The band playfully describe themselves as "made from happiness, miracle, mysterious, cake, strawberry, candy, funny, sweet drink, twinkle-star, perfume, teenage, youth, love, lover, milk tea, cafe au lait…and many many wonderful thing!". Their four studio albums: Manamoon (1999), One-Room Survival (2002), Ochamekan (2004) and Merry Go Round Jailhouse (2010) are recommended for fans of retro 60s pop.
