Stars of the Lid is an American ambient music duo formed 1993 in Austin, Texas, by guitarists Brian McBride and Adam Wiltzie. The duo list among their influences minimalist and electronic composers such as Arvo Pärt, Gavin Bryars and Henryk Górecki, as well as ambient music innovator Brian Eno. Their compositions are soundscapes with electronic droning, effects-treated guitars, piano, strings, horns and feedback, creating deeply emotional pieces of ambient music of grand scope yet spare, ephemeral beauty. When playing live, the group often added a string ensemble to broaden their sound palette. Both members are active on solo work and collaborative projects, and Wiltzie was previously part of the duo The Dead Texan, with Christina Vantzou. Stars of the Lid have released eight excellent studio albums, standouts include The Ballasted Orchestra (1997), Avec laudenum (1999), The Tired Sounds Of (2001) and And Their Refinement of the Decline (2007). In an interview McBride reveiled that the band's name refers to "your own personal cinema, located between your eye and eyelid", suggesting the colours and patterns one can see with closed eyes. Sadly, Brian McBride passed away in August 2023.
