Sunn O))) is an American experimental metal band formed 1998 in Seattle, Washington by Stephen O'Malley (bass, guitar) and Greg Anderson (bass, guitar). Additional members G. Stuart Dahlquist (bass) and Rex Ritter (keyboards) were also formerly with the band for several years. The band has an extreme heavy sound blending drone, doom metal, black metal, dark ambient, and noise rock, characterised by slow tempos, distorted guitars, lack of rhythm and melody, and alternative tunings. They have collaborated and recorded with Scott Walker, Boris, Ulver and Nurse With Wound. Outstanding albums include Black One (2005), Altar (2006), Monoliths & Dimensions (2009) and Life Metal (2019). The 2021 live double album Metta, Benevolence BBC 6 Live: On the Invitation of Mary Anne Hobbs is also highly recommended. Core member Stephen O'Malley also releases solo works under his own name and with bands including Khanate and Burning Witch. Greg Anderson also works with numerous other bands including Goatsnake and Engine Kid. The band name comes from Sunn Amplifiers, a company started in the 1960's by Norm Sundholm the original bass player for The Kingsmen (of "Louie Louie" fame), who designed a high-powered tube-based concert bass amplifier.
