Symphony X is an American progressive metal band formed 1994 in Middletown, New Jersey, by guitarist Michael Romeo, keyboardist Michael Pinnella, drummer Jason Rullo, bassist Thomas Miller and vocalist Rod Tyler. Tyler was soon replaced by current vocalist Russell Allen and Mike LePond took over bass duties in 1999. The band is known for its high level musical performances and clever compositional ideas. Symphony X have a unique sound and a musical identity which immediately set them apart from the pack. With neo-classical influences akin to Rainbow and Yngwie Malmsteen, mixed up with the darkest and most heavy moments of Dream Theater. The band is also distinguished by Russell Allen's power vocals and Michael Romeo's superb guitar work. As a recording outfit, the band has only released nine studio albums and one live album to-date since their debut in 1994. Standout albums include The Divine Wings of Tragedy (1997), Twilight in Olympus (1998), V: The New Mythology Suite (2000), The Odyssey (2000) and Paradise Lost (2007). The majority of the band's later albums were recorded and produced at The Dungeon studio which is located at the home of Symphony X's guitarist and composer Michael Romeo. Before his music career began, vocalist Russell Allen worked as a jouster at a Medieval Times Dinner Theater.
