The Dresden Dolls was an American musical duo formed 2000 in Boston, Massachusetts, by Amanda Palmer (vocals, keyboards) and Brian Viglione (drums, vocals, bass, guitar). The duo describe their music as "Brechtian punk cabaret" and can be considered part of the dark cabaret movement. Previously, Viglione was a member of punk-cabaret outfit The World/Inferno Friendship Society and Palmer had a fledgling but as yet unremarkable solo career. The duo attracted attention through their theatrical performances, supporting major acts such as Nine Inch Nails and Panic! At The Disco. They released some excellent early EPs and in 2003 their debut album The Dresden Dolls, which was critically well received. Before disbanding in 2008 they released two further studio albums and one live album. Since splitting, Amanda Palmer has had a successful career as a soloist and working with her band Amanda Palmer & The Grand Theft Orchestra. Brian Viglione became the drummer for Violent Femmes until 2016 and has since worked on collaboration projects. Standout Dresden Dolls releases include The Dresden Dolls EP, the albums The Dresden Dolls and Yes Virginia, and the excellent compilation, The Virginia Monologues.
