The Drones are an Australian indie rock band formed 1997 in Perth by mainstay lead vocalist and guitarist Gareth Liddiard. Other long term members include Rui Pereira (bass, guitar), Mike Noga (drums, vocals), Dan Luscombe (lead guitar, vocals, keyboards). Fiona Kitschin, Liddiard's domestic partner, joined on bass guitar and vocals in 2002. The band's 2002 debut album Here Come the Lies went largely unnoticed but attracted some rave reviews for its "raw, dark, noisy, uncompromising, heavy, dense, poetic and absolutely burning with passion" sound. It was three years before their second album Wait Long by the River and the Bodies of Your Enemies Will Float By, which attracted rave reviews and won the inaugural Australian Music prize. The band's next two albums The Miller's Daughter and Gala Mill maintained their excellent standards, particularly Gala Mill which achieved good sales and, again, won a swag of awards. The band have released seven studio albums to-date, all of them marked by Liddiard's uncompromising approach which attracts descriptions such as "brilliant, dark, mesmerising, depressing and gorgeous". The group has been on hold since December 2016 with Liddiard and Kitschin forming a new group, Tropical Fuck Storm. Outstanding Drones albums include Here Come the Lies, Long Wait by the River.., The Miller's Doughter, Gala Mill, I See Seaweed, and the live album A Thousand Mistakes: Warehouse Sessions. Liddiard has also released an excellent solo album Strange Tourist.
