Tommy Emmanuel | Artist
Tommy Emmanuel is an Australian guitarist born 1955 in Muswellbrook, NSW. Emmanuel is a true virtuoso known for his unparalleled skill, innovative playing style, and heartfelt musicality. He began playing the guitar at the age of four and by the age of six was a working professional musician. In the 1960s he and his older brother Phil formed the band The Midgets, performing at local venues and events. However, it was Tommy's solo career that would propel him to international stardom and establish him as one of the greatest acoustic guitarists of his generation. Emmanuel's playing style is characterised by his exceptional fingerpicking technique, impeccable rhythm, and ability to create intricate arrangements that blend elements of jazz, blues, country, and pop music. His performances are a masterclass in guitar playing, showcasing his incredible dexterity, speed, and musicality. One of Emmanuel's most remarkable talents is his ability to create the sound of a full band using only his acoustic guitar. Through a combination of percussive techniques, harmonics, and intricate finger-style patterns, he is able to produce rich, layered arrangements. During 1986–1988 and 1995, Emmanuel joined the lineup of the leading New Zealand/Australian 1970s rock group Dragon that had reformed in 1982, touring widely with them, including a 1987 tour with Tina Turner; he left the group to embark on a solo career. Emmanuel's discography is extensive and includes numerous solo albums, collaborations, and live recordings. His most iconic albums include Only (2000), Endless Road (2004), Little by Little (2010) and the 2008 live album Center Stage, all of which have received critical acclaim. In addition to his solo work, Tommy Emmanuel is also known for his collaborations with other musicians, including Chet Atkins, Eric Clapton, and John Denver, among others. Beyond his music, he is a passionate advocate for music education and frequently conducts workshops and masterclasses to inspire the next generation of musicians. In recognition of his contributions to music, Emmanuel has received numerous awards and accolades, including two Grammy nominations, a Certified Guitar Player award from Chet Atkins, and induction into the Australian Roll of Renown. At the 2011 ‘TommyFest’, Tommy took the chance to talk to the audience about his strong Christian faith.
