Tumbleweed is an Australian stoner rock group formed 1990 in Tarrawanna, Northern Illawarra, by three brothers, Dave Curley (vocals), Jay Curley (bass) and Lenny Curley (guitar), plus Richie Lewis (drums). The Curley brothers' first band, called Proton Energy Pills, had already released two singles and an excellent self-titled EP in 1990. After some lineup changes and a name change to Tumbleweed, the group now comprising Richie (vocals), Lenny (guitar), Jay (bass), Paul Hausmeister (guitar) and Steve O'Brien (drums) recorded their classic eponymous debut album in 1992. Tumbleweed has been described as "a post-psychedelic underground haze that evoked the spirit of 1969, with lashings of fuzz-drenched wah wah guitar riffs, hard-driving beats, languid vocal melodies and more hair than any band had a right to possess". In 1992 they supported Nirvana on the first gig of their Australian tour. Later that year Atlantic Records released their album internationally, renamed as Weedseed, and the band toured the USA and Europe to promote it. Their last album (to-date) was released in 2013 and the band periodically reunites to play one-off gigs. Outstanding albums include Tumbleweed, Galactaphonic, Return to Earth and Sounds From the Other Side. Also highly recommended are the superb 2010 compilation The Waterfront Years 1991-1993 which features their early singles and EPs, plus the proto-Tumbleweed EP release The Proton Energy Pills and the 2007 compilation Rocket to Tarrawanna.
