Uncle Tupelo was an alternative country music group formed 1987 in Belleville, Illinois, by Jay Farrar, Jeff Tweedy, and Mike Heidorn. The trio formed the band after the lead singer of their previous band, The Primatives, left to attend college. Although Uncle Tupelo broke up before it achieved commercial success, the band is renowned for its impact on the alternative country music scene. When they split, Farrar and Heidorn formed the highly regarded Alt-Country band Son Volt, and Tweedy formed Wilco. All four Uncle Tupelo studio albums are excellent: No Depression, Still Feel gone, March 16-20, 1992 and Anodyne. The compilation album 89/93: An Anthology is also superb.
