Rising Sons "Rising Sons Featuring Taj Mahal and Ry Cooder" (1964)

LP (NEW) - Vinyl, Music on Vinyl, Europe, 2015, MOVLP1261, 8718469537525, 2xLP, 180g Vinyl, Reissue

Rising Sons fused blues, rock and country influences into a joyous celebration of music and song. This seminal album marked the debut recordings for both Taj Mahal and Ry Cooder, and includes Jackie Lee Kincaid, Kevin Kelley (Byrds), Gary Marker (Captain Beefheart Magic Band) and Ed Cassidy (Spirit). Terry Melcher of Byrds fame was the producer. Their lone single and unreleased album form the core of this 22-track reissue, which features original band compositions plus imaginative rearrangements of standards like "Corrine, Corrina", an obscure Dylan cover "Walkin' Down the Line", a cover of Goffin/King's "Take a Giant Step" (later Mahal's signature tune), and nifty guitar interplay between Mahal and Cooder throughout. Overall, it sounds a lot more like it belongs in 1967-1968 than 1965-1966. This archival release has value above and beyond historical interest.
