Carl Lee Perkins was an American singer-songwriter born 1932 in Tiptonville, Tennessee, USA. Perkins was one of the original rockabilly artists who recorded at Sun Studios, in Memphis, in 1954. Perkins's songs were recorded by artists such as Elvis Presley, The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, Johnny Cash and Eric Clapton, which further established his place in the history of popular music. Paul McCartney claimed that "if there were no Carl Perkins, there would be no Beatles". In terms of guitar style, Perkins was technically accomplished, with a host of techniques learnt from blues players and a rich vocabulary of chords, rhythm parts and solos not typically heard before in popular music. Amongst his best-known songs are "Blue Suede Shoes", "Matchbox" and "Everybody's Trying To Be My Baby". As well as his solo works Perkins worked with Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison and Jerry Lee Lewis. He recorded 21 studio albums and 41 singles, many of which were covered by other artists. Outstanding recordings include Blue Suede Shoes EP ('58), Dance Album of Carl Perkins ('58), Whole Lotta Shakin' ('58), On Top ('69) and the Sun Records compilation Original Golden Hits ('70). Also highly recommended is the 2015 release The Sun Singles Collection.
