Charlyn Marie "Chan" Marshall, aka Cat Power, is an American singer-songwriter, musician, actress, and model born 1972 in Atlanta Georgia. Cat Power was originally the name of Marshall's first band, but has become her stage name as a solo artist. Marshall was exposed to music from an early age through her father Charlie Marshall who a was blues musician, and her involvement with Southern Baptist church choirs. Her first instrument was a 1950s Silvertone guitar, which she taught herself to play. In 1994 she recorded her first two albums in a small basement studio in NYC supported by Sonic Youth drummer, Steve Shelley. Her third album What Would The Community Think, released '96 on Matador, was the first to gain widespread critical praise. This was followed in '98 by the superb Moon Pix, then 2000's disappointing Covers album, then the excellent You Are Free, in 2003. By this stage Marshall was established as one of the US's leading indie rock singer/songwriters. She has since gone on to release 10 studio albums and has collaborated with many name artists such as Eddie Vedder, Dave Grohl, Warren Ellis, Beck and Yoko Ono. Outstanding albums include What Would the Community Think, Moon Pix, You Are Free and The Greatest.
