Felt | Artist

Felt was an English indie pop band formed 1979 in Water Orton, Warwickshire by Lawrence (vocals, guitar). Lawrence released the single "Index", as self-published solo recording, then recruited band members Nick Gilbert (drums) and Maurice Deebank (guitar), whose classical-influenced jangly style of playing would provide the band's signature sound in its early years. The band performed as a trio before deciding that bass guitar was needed. Gilbert switched to bass and drummer Gary Ainge was added. Ainge would remain the only constant member besides Lawrence throughout the rest of Felt's existence, as well as the only member to play on all ten of their albums. They were active for ten years through the 1980s, releasing ten singles and ten albums. The band's name was inspired by Tom Verlaine's emphasis of the word "felt" in the Television song "Venus". Felt's music has been described variously as Jangle Pop, Indie Pop, Post Punk, Lounge, Dream Pop and Jazz. After disbanding in 1989 Lawrence formed the bands Denim, then Go-Kart Mozart. Deebank released one solo album in 1984 entitled Inner Thought Zone. Standout Felt albums include The Splendour of Fear, The Strange Idols Pattern and OtherShort Stories, Ignite the Seven Cannons, Forever Breathes the Lonely Word, Poem of the River and Me and a Monkey on the Moon.
