Fleet Foxes is an American indie folk band formed 2006 in Seattle, Washington, by singer-songwriter Robin Pecknold and Skyler Skjelset (guitar, mandolin, vocals). The duo became friends in high school with a mutual love of artists such as Bob Dylan, Brian Wilson and Hank Williams. Their first band was called The Pineapples but they renamed it Fleet Foxes and added new members Casey Wescott (keyboards, vocals), Bryn Lumsden (bass) and Nicholas Peterson (drums, vocals). J. Tillman aka Father John Misty was the band's drummer and vocalist over the period 2008-2012, appearing on their second studio album. The band came to prominence in 2008 with the release of their second EP Sun Giant and their brilliant debut album Fleet Foxes on Sub Pop. That album achieved instant critical success including five stars from Rolling Stone, which compared it to the likes of the Beach Boys, Animal Collective and Crosby, Still, Nash & Young. Pitchfork gave it 9.0 out of 10 and "Album of the Year", and The Guardian awarded the album five stars and declared it "a landmark in American music — an instant classic". The band followed up three years later with the equally superb Helplessness Blues album, then the excellent Crack-Up in 2017. Also highly recommended is the 2018 compilation of their early work, First Collection 2006-2009.
