Gryphon is an English progressive and medieval folk rock band formed 1973 in London by Brian Gulland (winds, bassoon, keyboards, vocals), Richard Harvey (keyboards, woodwinds, mandolin), Dave Oberlé (drums, percussion, flageolet, vocals), and Graeme Taylor (guitar, bass, recorder, mandolin). Early on the band was hired to write and perform the music for The Tempest at the UK National Theatre, for director Peter Hall. They flourished briefly in the progressive rock and folk revival heydays of the early 1970s, with their brand of prog-infused medieval music using modern and ancient instruments. In the late '70s they disintegrated before reforming for a one-off reunion in 2009, then subsequent gigs at the Cropredy Festival in 2015, 2016 and 2017. ReInvention, the first new Gryphon record for 41 years was released in 2018. To-date they have released six studio albums, standouts include Gryphon, Midnight Mushrumps, Red Queen to Gryphon Three and Raindance. In 1974, at the invitation of their friend Rick Wakeman, Yes' manager Brian Lane also became Gryphon's manager. This gave them greater international exposure and they undertook a series of European and US concert tours supporting Yes.
