Liza Minnelli is an American actress and singer born March 12 1946 in Los Angeles California. She is a cult figure in the show-biz world, known for her powerful voice, electrifying stage presence, and immense talent. Daughter of Hollywood icon Judy Garland and director Vincente Minnelli, Minnelli's entertainment lineage is deeply ingrained in her DNA. Minnelli began as a nightclub singer as an adolescent, making her professional nightclub debut at the age of 19 at the Shoreham Hotel in Washington. She rose to fame in the 1960s and quickly became a sensation on Broadway, with her dynamic performances in musicals such as "Flora the Red Menace" and "The Act," for which she earned Tony Awards. An acclaimed performance in the drama film The Sterile Cuckoo (1969) marked a film breakthrough for Minnelli and brought her a nomination for an Academy Award. However, it was her role as Sally Bowles in the film adaptation of "Cabaret" in 1972 that catapulted her to international stardom and earned her an Academy Award for Best Actress. After a lengthy career hiatus, Minnelli collaborated with the Pet Shop Boys in 1989 on the electronic dance album Results which hit the top 10 in the UK and the US, spawning four singles: "Losing my Mind", "Don't Drop Bombs", "So Sorry I Said", and "Love Pains". Later that year, she performed "Losing My Mind" live at the Grammys Award ceremony before receiving a Grammy Legend Award herself. With this award, she became one of only 16 people to win an Emmy, Grammy, Tony and Academy Award for her achievements. Minnelli, who has married and divorced four times, was first married to Australian singer Peter Allen. Minnelli also dedicates much time to AmfAR the Foundation for AIDS Research, co-founded by Elizabeth Taylor. In 2007, she stated in an interview "AmfAR is important to me because I've lost so many friends to AIDS".
