Mavis Staples is an American rhythm and blues and gospel singer, actress, and civil rights activist born 1939 in Chicago, Illinois. Staples recorded and performed with her family's band The Staple Singers and as a solo artist. Staples was fully immersed in gospel and soul music from a young age as well as Black American politics through her father's affiliations with Martin Luther King. She has received a swag of honours throughout her career and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1999 and the Blues Hall of Fame in 2017. Outstanding albums include Mavis Staples, Only for the Lonely, Have a Little Faith, I believe to my Soul and We'll Never Turn Back.
