Mournful Congregation is an Australian funeral death metal band formed 1993 in Loxton South Australia by Damon Good (vocals, guitar, bass), Ben Petch (guitar), and Adrian Bickle (drums). The present day lineup consists of mainman Damon Good aka The Great Righteous Destroyer, together with Justin Hartwig (guitar), Ben Newsome (bass), Ben Patch (guitar), and Tim Call (drums). The original members came together from Adelaide based bands Chalice and Cauldron Black Ram. During the 1990s the band released three demos; the last of these Tears From A Grieving Heart was re-released on vinyl in 2001. All of the band's demo releases and early singles were included on the double CD The Dawning of Mournful Hymns released in 2002. 2005 saw the release of the band's first LP release The Monad of Creation. In 2009, the band performed live for the first time in their fifteen-year existence. They played four Australian shows, followed up by a further 17 shows throughout Europe to promote their album The June Frost, released that year. With various lineup changes, but always with Damon Good at the helm the band has gone on to release to-date six consistently strong studio albums plus several EP's and compilations. Standout studio album releases include The Monad of Creation (2005), The June Frost (2009), The Book of Kings (2011), and The Incubus of Karma (2018). Mournful Congregation's so-called "withering soundscapes" are based on atmospheric death-doom (alternatively, funeral doom with death doom influences) with huge amounts of atmosphere and some tasteful acoustic sections. Various reviewers have pointed out distinctions in the band's sound making them stand out.. "the subtle details start to present themselves.. "It’s a crushingly heavy & agonizingly slow experience with a gothic tinge that makes it feel even darker.. "then there are soft moments of basic melodic doom, but this is funeral doom in its finest form.. "Crushing like the waves of the melancholy beauty of life." Outside of his work with Mournful Congregation, Damon Good aka Alim, D.E.M.O.N., Elsewhere, The Great Righteous Destroyer, and Mys-Carriage, continues to work with bands Cauldron Black Ram, Johnny Touch, Martire, Misery's Omen, and StarGazer. Plus he fronts the dark ambient solo project The Esoteric Connexion. Good is also credited with playing Fretless Bass on Blood Incantation's EP Interdimensional Extinction, and Virgin Black's album Requiem.
