Natalie Rose LeBrecht | Artist
Natalie Rose LeBrecht is an American Neoclassical-Folk musician born 1998 in New York. Devoted to studies in sound, texture and emotion, LeBrecht creates an intriguing music world of her own, which has been variously categorised as new-age neoclassical, avant-folk, freak folk, psychedelic folk, ambient pop, and modern classical. LeBrecht taught herself to program an analog synthesizer's timbres from scratch, and built a new set of glacial, heady compositions out of them, eventually singing to accompany the keyboard parts she was playing. She spent some years studying with and assisting La Monte Young and Marian Zazeela at their legendary sound-and-light installation, the Dream House. As with their work, her singular, precisely focused vision is shored up by its openness to artistic voices beyond her own. She released her first albums under the name Greenpot Bluepot, and has gone on to release five studio albums to-date. When Covid struck, and the world effecticvely shut down, in order to continue her recording projects LeBrecht within weeks taught herself how to record, mix and edit with a digital audio workstation. She recorded her vocal parts (sometimes multi-tracked into a radiant choir) at home, assembling rough mixes and sending them off to her collaborators. For her album Holy Prana Open Game, she worked with the Australian guitarist Mick Turner and drummer Jim White, from the band Dirty Three, as well as woodwind player David Lackner, a longtime presence on her recordings. Standout album releases include Warraw (2003), Imagining Weather (2005), Holy Prana Open Game (2023), and Primordial Sky Palace (2024). One reviewer nicely summed up their experience listening to LeBrecht's debut record as follows; "Natalie makes the do-it-yourself freaky folk I usually do love. It's dreamy, it's delirious and definitely lost in something. It somehow sets in the city instead of forests and nature; it's like the spirits resurrected by Comus would have moved into your bathroom. The result is a messed up and weird something with a playful attitude that needs some listens to get clearer and you will find yourself getting stuck into it for longer".
