Red Lorry Yellow Lorry | Artist
Red Lorry Yellow Lorry aka The Lorries was an English goth/post punk band formed 1981 in Leeds, UK, by guitarist and songwriter Chris Reed, vocalist Mark Sweeney, bassist Steve Smith and drummer Mick Brown. Sweeney left the band in late 1981 and Reed permanently took over as vocalist. The band underwent further lineup changes including the addition of second guitarist Martin Fagan, and Chris Oldroyd coming in on drums to replace Brown who joined goth-rock band The Mission. The group's sound was characterised by numbing guitar drone, powerfully throbbing bass, pounding drum machine and Reed's cavernous vocal tones. Initially they were labelled as a "goth rock" Joy Division soundalike however the band themselves preferred to ally themselves to bands such as Wire and MC5. After several excellent singles and the strong EP This Today, their debut album Talk About the Weather (1985) received positive reviews and peaked at No. 3 on the NME independent albums chart. The singles "Hollow Eyes", "Chance" and "Spinning Round" also sold well and brought the band good exposure for an independent band on a small label. They released their second album Paint Your Wagon on the Red Rhino label, before signing to an offshoot of Beggars Banquet Records. They released three more albums, the latest being 1991's Blasting Off. The first two albums are stand-outs, as is the EP This Today. Also recommended is the 1987 compilation Smashed Hits, and Albums and Singles 1982-1989 from 2017. Chris Reed has also released several solo albums.
