Richard Lewis Springthorpe aka Rick Springfield is an Australian musician and actor born 1949 in the unprepossessing suburb of South Wentworthville, New South Wales. He was a member of the rock group Zoot from 1969-71 then started his solo career with his debut single "Speak to the Sky" which reached the top 10 in Australia in 1972. With the hit single under his belt and his undeniable good looks, Springfield moved to the United States where he released two solid bubblegum-pop albums: Comic Book Heroes (1973) and Mission Magic (1974), produced by Australian musician Robie Porter. Unfortunately for Springfield and despite his obvious musical talent, his US record company Columbia promoted him as a teeny pop idol similar to David Cassidy and Donny Osmand, which held him back as a serious musician. However it all turned around with the No. 1 hit "Jessie's Girl" in 1981, for which he received the Grammy Award for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance. He followed with four more top 10 U.S. hits: "I've Done Everything for You", "Don't Talk to Strangers, "Affair of the Heart" and "Love Somebody". Springfield's two U.S. top 10 albums are Working Class Dog (1981) and Success Hasn't spoiled Me Yet (1982). Springfield is also a successful film and TV actor having had lead roles in the Six Million Dollar Man, Rockford Files, Battlestar Galactica and Californication. He became a soap opera star in the role of M.D. Noah Drake on General Hospital. Springfield became a US citizen in March 2006.
