Robert Pollard | Artist

Robert Ellsworth Pollard Jr. is an American musician and singer-songwriter born 1957 in Dayton, Ohio. He is the leader and creative force behind indie rock groups Guided by Voices and Boston Spaceships as well as having a prolific solo career with many fine albums released under his own name. With more than 2,000 songs registered to his name, Pollard is among the most prolific songwriters of his time. In 2006 Paste magazine listed him as the 78th greatest living songwriter and in 2007 he was nominated for the Shortlist Music Prize. After graduating College Pollard worked for several years as a teacher while working on his fledgling band with fellow Northridge High School chums Kevin Fennell and itch Mitchell. In total, Guided by Voices released 16 full-length original albums between 1987 and 2004, as well as a large number of EPs and compilations. Although known as a lo-fi band that relied on home recordings, in later years the group relied more on professional recording studios and worked with producers such as Ric Ocasek. Outstanding albums include Not in my Airforce, Waved Out, Choreographed Man of War and From a Compound Eye. The Robert Pollard and Doug Gillard collaboration album Speak Kindly of Your Volunteer Fire Department is also highly recommended. Also noteworthy is the 2006 collaboration Blues and Boogie Shoes, done with Tommy Keene under the moniker Keene Brothers.
