The Heptones | Artist

The Heptones are a Jamaican rocksteady and reggae vocal trio formed 1965 in Kingston, Jamaica, by Leroy Sibbles, Earl Morgan and Barry Llewellyn. The Heptones were contemporaries of the Wailers and the Maytals and one of the more significant trios of that era. They played a major role in the gradual transition between ska and rocksteady into reggae with their three-part harmonies. Working with Coxsone Dodd at Studio One they had a long run of hit singles starting with "Fattie Fattie" in 1966. Following this were "Pretty Looks Isn't All", "Get In The Groove", "Be a Man", "Sea of Love", "Ting a Ling", "Party Time", and "I Hold the Handle." The band has released 27 albums including the standouts On Top, Book of Rules, Heptones & Friends Vol. 2, and the superb Lee Perry produced Party Time from 1977. Their 1973 hit "Book of Rules" featured on the soundtrack for the 1978 Jamaican film Rockers and the 1998 American comedy-thriller film Homegrown.
