The Jam was an English mod/punk rock band formed 1972 in Woking, Surrey, by Paul Weller, Rick Buckler and Steve Brookes. The three members were students at Sheerwater Secondary School in Woking. Bruce Foxton (bass) joined in '73 and Buckler left, resulting in the classic trio that stayed together until 1982 and recorded some of the best mod/punk albums of the period. Weller was heavily influenced by The Who's My Generation as well as the Motown, Stax and Atlantic artists who were popular with the Mod revival scene. Their first album In The City was released In 1977 and was full of short fast numbers which were punk-like but also heavily influenced by 1960's rock. The debut album did well and they rushed out a second album This is the Modern World later that same year. Over the following three years they recorded three classic albums: All Mod Cons, Setting Sons and Sound Affects, which established the band's reputation and gave Weller rock star status. They made one more album, 1992's The Gift, which is something of an anti-climax. Other outstanding releases include Extras: A Collection of Rarities (1992) and the live recording The Jam at the BBC (2002) which is excellent.
