The New Christs are an Australian hard rock band formed 1980 in Sydney by founding member and mainstay, Rob Younger, on lead vocals. Younger was the lead singer in punk/garage rock legends Radio Birdman and spin-off band New Race. The lineup for the New Christs 1989 debut album Distemper included Younger (vocals, production) with Jim Dickson (bass), Nick Fisher (drums) and Charlie Owen (guitar, piano, organ) from Beasts of Bourbon. The album got strong reviews and reached No.1 on the ARIA Alternative Albums Chart. The band then undertook two tours of Europe and toured Australia, culminating in supporting Ramones at their Sydney gigs in 1991. They went on to release a total of six consistently excellent studio albums with ongoing lineup changes which saw the inclusion of names such as Chris Masuak (Birdman, Hitmen), Mark Kingsmill (Hoodoo Gurus) and Paul Larsen (Celibate Rifles). Their music has been described as glorious songwriting, piled high with hooks and melodies with a Deep Purple like organ line and dark psychedelic guitar solos. The band still gigs periodically, alongside Rob Younger's record production work and occasional reformations of Radio Birdman. Standout albums include Distemper, lower Yourself, We Got This!, Gloria, Incantations and Live 2011. Divine Rites (1988) a compilation of early singles and EP's is also highly recommended.
