The Renderers are a New Zealand band formed 1989 in Christchurch by Husband and wife duo Maryrose Crook (vocals, guitar) and Brian Crook (vocals, guitar, synthesizer, keyboards, banjo, bass). The core duo work with a revolving cast of back-up players. Maryrose Crook, nee Wilkinson, is an accomplished artist and musician. Aside from her work with The Renderers, she released the excellent solo album Ghosts of Our Vegas Lives (2006), backed by The Renderers. Brian Crooks has worked, and continues to work, with many influential NZ groups including The Terminals and Flies Inside The Sun, plus he releases solo albums under the name Bible Black, as well as his own name, including the excellent Bathysphere album released in 2000. The Renderers have to-date released nine albums, including one Maryrose Crook and one Brian Crook-led album. Standouts include The Surface of Jupiter (1996), A Dream of the Sea (1998), Ghosts of Our Vegas Lives (2006), Monsters & Mismas (2009) and A Rocket Into Nothing (2011). Also highly recommended is the 2013 compilation Measured Strychnine Invitations. The band have toured New Zealand twice as the backing band for American alt-folk star Bonnie Prince Billy. The 2011 Christchurch earthquake destroyed the Crooks' home in Diamond Harbour and they moved with family to the United States the following year. Now based in Joshua Tree, California Maryrose and Brian tour as The Renderers and Maryrose Crook creates and exhibits paintings.
