Weddings, Parties, Anything was an Australian folk rock band formed 1984 in Melbourne by mainstay Mick Thomas (vocals, guitar, bass). The lineup changed over time but long-serving members also included Mark Wallace (piano, accordion), Paul Thomas (guitar), Peter Lawler (bass), Marcus Schintler (drums) and Jen Anderson (violin). Thomas' idea behind the band was to combine punk rock inspiration with his love for the honest storytelling in folk music. The band's excellent debut album Scorn of The Women was self recorded and produced, but soon after completion they signed with Warners who released the album. Despite it's lo-fi sound, the album got rave reviews, with one commentator describing it as "wonderful and thought-provoking. It’s not often potent lyricism is tied to arresting music, but they’re married here and it’s all good". Over the next two years they released three more excellent albums: No Show Without Punch, Roaring Days and The Big Don't Argue, which established WPA as one of Australia's most popular bands. They released four more studio albums before breaking up in 1998, but by that stage their strongest work was behind them. Their single "Father's Day" won song of the year at the 1993 ARIA awards. Mick Thomas also has a swag of solo releases to his name.
