Giovanni Giorgio Moroder is an Italian singer, songwriter, DJ and record producer born 1940 in Urtijëi, Italy. Dubbed the "Father of Disco", Moroder is credited with pioneering Italo disco and electronic dance music, and his work with synthesizers heavily influenced several music genres such as new wave, house and techno music. In 1968 he moved to Munich and came to prominence when his first single "Looky, Looky" was awarded a Gold Disc in 1970. He then founded the renowned Musicland Studios and made a name for himself in the early 1970s pumping out hits under his own name "Giorgio" as well as producing work for other artists. Some of his early hits were "Son of My Father" for Chicory Tip, the disco classic "I Feel Love" for Donna Summer, and the "Chase" theme from the film Midnight Express. Moroder was initially derided by the progressive rock fraternity, but later many leading artists and bands recognised the influence of his synth-driven style and sound production excellence. Some of his latter day collaborations include Blondie, Sparks, David Bowie, Philip Oakey and Kylie Minogue. Moroder has released 21 studio albums including movie soundtracks. Standouts include Son of my Father, From Here to Eternity, W=mc2, Midnight Express, Cat People and Music From Battlestar Gallactica. Moroder has won three Academy Awards: Best Original Score for Midnight Express (1978); Best Song for "Flashdace.. What a Feeling" (1983) and Best Song for "Take my Breath Away", from Top Gun (1986).
