Death Grips is an American experimental hip hop band formed 2010 in Sacramento, California, by Stefan Burnett aka MC Ride (vocals, lyrics), Zach Hill (drums, producer) and Andy Morin (keyboards, producer, engineer). The band's sound draws on punk rock, electronic, noise and industrial styles and their live act is characterised by MC Ride's aggressive performing style. Death Grips' experimental style, while polarising listening audiences, has drawn rave reviews from many critics and support from prominent artists such as Björk and David Bowie. Though he is not the group's frontman, Hill has been credited with being the driving creative force behind the project. Drawing from punk rock, electronic, noise, and industrial styles, the band's innovative and often difficult-to-categorize sound has earned critical acclaim and a cult following. Their first full length album was 2011's mixtape Exmilitary, which was released on cassette and attracted critical reviews. The band signed with Epic Records but, unhappy with that arrangement, deliberately leaked their second album The Money Store as a free download in breach of their contract and were dropped by Epic. Re-signed on the Warp Records label, the band has to-date released nine studio albums, two live albums, and a bunch of excellent EPs and Singles. They are consistently challenging in terms of musical content and by their use of provocative album titles and explicit images. Standout releases include Exmilitary (2011), The Money Store (2012), No Love Deep Web (2012), Niggas on the Moon (2014), Jenny Death (2015), Bottomless Pit (2016) and Year of the Snitch (2018). The 2015 compilation The Powers That B is also recommended. Death Grips' activity has been relatively quiet during the early 2020s, with most of the band's activity being relegated to unannounced re-releases of previous material. On May 12, 2022, Death Grips published a cryptic video of a moth with a heavy trance background, presumed to be a teaser for new music. But there has been no new material released since 2021's Gmail and the Restraining Orders EP.
