Zachary Lane Bryan is an American country music singer-songwriter born 1996 in Okinawa, Japan. Bryan was born in Japan where his father was serving in the US Navy, but he grew up in Oologah, Oklahoma. Continuing a family tradition, Bryan was also an active-duty member of the US Navy for eight years, enlisting at the age of 17. He attained the rating of Aviation Ordnanceman Second Class, and he used his spare time to write music for his enjoyment. He finished his service in the Navy in 2021 at the age of 25. Bryan started uploading his music to YouTube in 2017, with his friends recording him performing using his iPhone. The first song he uploaded to YouTube was the single "God Speed" which ended up being a track on his debut album. Bryan uploaded 16 songs of varying popularity onto his YouTube before "Heading South" went viral. The song was recorded outside his Navy barracks. His debut album, DeAnn (2019) was dedicated to his late mother and released on August 24, 2019. It was written in two months and recorded with his friends in a Florida Airbnb. After a second self-produced album, Elisabeth (2020), he signed with Warner Music Group and released his top-five U.S. Billboard 200 album American Heartbreak (2022), featuring the single "Something in the Orange". In 2023, his self-titled fourth album debuted at number one on the U.S. Billboard 200, with the track "I Remember Everything" featuring Kacey Musgraves debuting at number one on the U.S. Hot 100 Country Songs. The song won a Grammy Award for Best Country Duo/Group Performance. He released his fifth studio album The Great American Bar Scene in 2024. The album features support from artists Noeline Hofmann, John Moreland, John Mayer, and Bruce Springsteen. Musically, Bryan's sound is indebted to the literary side of the Red Dirt Country sound of Oklahoma. He wrote a song saluting Evan Felker of the Turnpike Troubadours, one of the genre's leading lights of the 2010s. Bryan's plaintive country troubadour sound has catapulted him to stardom in the country music world after a working career of little more than three years. When asked about his success, the artist himself explains with engaging humility “I've got no grand explanation for these songs, I got no riddle in reasoning behind writing them, I don't have a bullshit roll-out plan to stuff it in front of as many people as I can. I just wrote some poems and songs that I want to share because I think they’re special. Some of them are heavy, some of them are hopeful, but more than anything what's most important to me is that they're all mine. I'm grateful because I got the chance in this life to be original when it mattered.”
