Meshuggah is a Swedish extreme metal band formed 1987 in Umeå, Sweden, by vocalist Jens Kidman and lead guitarist Fredrik Thordendal, drummer Tomas Haake, who joined in 1990, rhythm guitarist Mårten Hagström, who joined in 1993 and bassist Dick Lövgren since 2004. Meshuggah are highly regarded in heavy metal circles for their innovative musical style employing, complex, fast-tempo polymetered song structures, fusing death metal, thrash metal and progressive metal elements. They first attracted international attention with the 1995 release Destroy Erase Improve which attracted a strong cult audience following. Describing their 2005 album Catch Thirtythree, one reviewer described the the band's sound as "a wormhole of anxiety, fear, and pure alien atmosphere. In junction with a over-arching concept that is extremly psychological, surreal, and very dark with no certainty of reprieve. Inside is also some of the best executed, highly ambitious music I've ever heard". To-date the band has released nine studio albums including a revised version of the 2002 album Nothing, with re-recorded guitar parts, remixing and remastering. Meshuggah was nominated for a Grammy Award for their song "Clockworks" from their 2016 album The Violent Sleep of Reason, under the "Best Metal Performance" category. Standout albums include Destroy Erase Improve, Chaosphere, Catch Thirtythree, and Nothing (2006).
