Crass was an English art collective and punk rock band formed 1977 in Epping, Essex, by Steve Ignorant (vocals), Penny Rimbaud (drums, radio), Phil Clancey (guitar), Pete Wright (bass, vocals), Eve Libertine (vocals) and Joy de Vivre (vocals). The band, which was based around Dial House, an open-house community, promoted anarchism as a political ideology, a way of life and a resistance movement. Crass popularised the anarcho-punk movement of the punk subculture, advocating direct action, animal rights, feminism, anti-fascism, and environmentalism. In total the band released five studio albums which were designed to incite controversy with their provocative artworks and subject matter. The band claim their musical style was influenced by classical musicians such as Benjamin Britten, and free jazz and avant-garde composers such as John Cage and Karlheinz Stockhausen, more so than rock music. Standout albums include The Feeding of the Five Thousand, Stations of the Crass, Penis Envy and Christ: The Album.
