Daniel Dumile, best known by his stage name MF Doom, was a British-American rapper and record producer, born 1971 in London and died 31 October 2020. Noted for his intricate wordplay, signature metal mask, and "supervillain" stage persona, Doom became a major figure of underground hip hop in the 2000s. In addition to his MF Doom persona Dumile also worked under the names Viktor Vaughn, King Geedorah and MetalFingers. Born in London, Dumile moved to Long Island, New York, at a young age. He began his career in 1988 as a member of KMD performing under the name Zev Love X. That group disbanded in 1993 upon the death of member DJ Subroc, Dumile's brother. After a hiatus, Dumile reemerged in the late 1990s, performing at open mic events while wearing a metal mask resembling Marvel Comics supervillain Doctor Doom, who is depicted on the cover of his 1999 debut solo album Operation: Doomsday. He adopted the MF Doom persona and rarely made unmasked public appearances thereafter. Between 2003-05, Doom released four solo studio albums, including the critically acclaimed Mm..Food (2004) using the MF Doom name, one as King Geedorah, and two as Viktor Vaughn. He also released three collaborative albums, for a total of seven albums in three years. Most notable among these was the 2004 album Madvillainy, released with producer Madlib under the name Madvillain. Madvillainy is regarded as Doom's masterpiece, and is recognised as a landmark album in hip hop. Around this time he also released an album with producer Danger Mouse under the name Danger Doom. A prolific recording artist, Dumille released 19 solo albums as MF Doom/Viktor Vaughn/King Goodorah, plus numerous group and collaboration albums: 2 with KMD, 1 with Monsta Island Czars, 4 with Madvillain, 1 with DangerDoom, 1 with JJ Doom, and 1 with NehruvianDOOM. Standout albums include Operation: Doomsday, Mm.. Food, Take Me To Your Leader, Vaudeville Villain, Bl_ck B_st_rds, Madvillainy, Mad Villainy Instrumentals, and The Mouse and the Mask. Also highly recommended is the 2006 compilation MetalFingers Presents Special Herbs: Vol. 0-9. Upon his death, Variety magazine called Dumile "one of the most celebrated, unpredictable and enigmatic figures in independent hip-hop".
