Bobbie Lee Gentry is an American singer-songwriter born 1942 in Chickasaw County, Mississippi. She was one of the first female artists to compose and produce her own material in the post-war American music scene. Her songs typically drew on her Mississippi roots to compose vignettes of the Southern United States, exemplified by her first hit record "Ode to Billy Joe". Gentry had a large following outside the USA and in 1968-69 hosted her own series on BBC-TV London which was popular in the UK and Europe. Outstanding albums include Ode to Billie Joe, Delta Sweete, Local Gentry and Live at the BBC.
