Dinosaur Jr. is an American rock band formed 1984 in Amherst, Massachusetts, J Mascis (vocals, guitar, drums), Lou Barlow (bass, vocals), and Murph (drums). Mascis and Barlow met at high school where they played in a punk band. Barlow split from Dinosaur Jr. in 1989 after their first two albums to form lo-fi indie band Sebadoh. He returned to Dinosaur Jr. in 2005 while continuing with Sebadoh. Mascis's drawling vocals and distinct guitar sound, influenced by 1960s and 1970s classic rock characterized by extensive use of feedback and distortion, were highly influential in the alternative rock movement of the 1990s. Their debut album Dinosaur was was well received un the underground college scene, but their second release You're Living all Over Me was their big breakthrough, with many critics rating it equal to the best work of contemporaries Nirvana and The Pixies. Their third album Bug also attracted great reviews and brought them to the attention of major label Sire who signed them up in 1990. The band has released a total of eleven studio albums to-date, several of which are virtually solo works with J Mascis playing all the instruments. Standout Dinosaur Jr albums include You're Living All Over Me, Bug, Green Mind, Where You Been, Beyond and Farm.
