Pure Comedy is the third studio album from Indie hero Josh Tillman. This double album, released in 2017, is his boldest statement to-date in music and concept. Following his seasoned career as an independent songwriter, then Fleet Foxes drummer, Pure Comedy sees FJM cement himself as a cult figure and prophet. The album sees Tillman systematically dismantling the human condition (and himself) over 80 minutes of challenging, indulgent, yet richly layered and melancholic songwriting that serves as the picturesque soundtrack for current affairs. This release follows the romantic and luscious I Love You, Honeybear (2015) and serves as the demented cousin of that former effort, but is a masterpiece nevertheless. The title track and "The Memo" are great examples of Tillman exploring things on a grand scale laced with bitter humour and clever songwriting. Without doubt a divisive listen, but incredible nevertheless.
