Faun Fables is an American psych-folk band formed 1997 Oakland, California by Dawn McCarthy (vocals, guitar, flute, autoharp, percussion, gamelan). McCarthy's main collaborator is Nils Frykdahl (guitar, vocals, flute, autoharp, percussion), plus she works with additional members Meredith Yayanos (violin, theremin, vocals), Kirana Peyton (harmonium, bass, percussion, vocals) and Sheila Bosco (vocals, percussion). McCarthy, who has also collaborated on two albums with Bonnie Prince Billy, draws on many influences from British, Scandinavian, Appalachian and Eastern European music. Her shows often contain elements of theatre—dance and puppet shows are common elements. Her music has been compared to Polish poet-singer Ewa Demaeczyk, and to neo-psych-folk artists such as Devendra Banhart and Current 93. Faun Fables has released six studio albums, standouts are Early Song, Mother Twilight, Transit Rider, Light of a Vaster Dark and Born of the Sun.
