Poetic, Political and Powerful. The weight of the lyrics and works of Kae Tempest is documenting the decline of western democracy in a unique, but equally important way. Their closest contemporary would be store favourite Sleaford Mods due to the spoken word incorporation of rap and electronic elements, but less juvenile and more lamenting for the state of British affairs.
For those unfamiliar, their 2016 Mercury Prize nominated 'Let Them Eat Chaos' saw the culmination of years of critical hype and hard work on developing their sound. The blend of spoken word and social commentary brings to mind Gil Scot Heron and Patti Smith. Tempest would again continue the hot streak with 2019's 'The Book of Traps and Lessons'. Their work has also led to a collaboration with store favourites, The Comet Is Coming on their last record, before dropping the T from their first name as apart of their non-binary transition last year.
The artistic and literary talent on display isn't limited to the music as well. Tempest also is a best-selling author and acclaimed playwright, providing a wealth of material for fans who are willing to dive further into the modern literary genius.
