The music of Phoebe Bridgers is ominous and beautiful, and is at a new creative peak on her latest masterpiece, 'Punisher'.
At first listen, the indie-folk minimalism of Bridgers could easily be written off as basic - a mistake I fell for on my first listen of her new LP. However, it's quiet, haunting tones reveal themselves across several listens. 'Punisher' is an unsettling portrayal of the darker emotions in her relationship, which create a compelling and brutal portrait of a vulnerable lover. Her sounds call to mind Nick Drake, alongside Grouper and Sinead O'Connor. An easy contemporary comparison would be Perfume Genius's 'No Shape' (2017), another personal favourite from the last decade.
Her side projects also show her strength in collaboration, especially her work with Conor Oberst (Bright Eyes) in their 'Better Oblivion Community Centre' project. It's also worth noting the brief 'boygenius' EP that saw another joint effort with Julien Baker and Lucy Dacus. Both of which we hope to hear new music from soon.
Phoebe is due to tour Australia with critical legends, The National. We hope that she still plans to tour with them if/when that goes ahead.
The albums 'Punisher' (2020) and 'Stranger in the Alps' (2017) are both available in the Store.
