Bert Jansch | Artist

Herbert "Bert" Jansch was a Scottish folk musician born 1943 in Glasgow. He was the founding member of the band Pentangle, a brilliant guitarist and a leading figure in the 1960's British folk revival. After he left school Jansch served his musical apprenticeship busking around the UK and Europe, scoring the occasional paying gig. He move to London in '63 and met engineer and producer Bill Leader who recorded Jansch on reel-to-reel tape at Leader's home. Leader sold the tape for £100 to Transatlantic Records who produced an album directly from it. The album Bert Jansch was released in 1965 and went on to sell 150,000 copies. Jansch co-founded the successful folk group The Pentangle in 1968 along with John Renbourn, Jacqui McShee and Danny Thompson. They recorded a swag of excellent albums before disbanding in 1973. Over his career Jansch recorded 25 solo albums and toured extensively from the 1960s to the 21st century. Outstanding albums include Bert Jansch, Jack Orion, Birthday Blues, Rosemary Lane, Moonshine, L.A. Turnaround, Avocet and The Black Swan.
